Broadwater Parklands to be expanded?

The Broadwater Parklands could soon be extended, allowing the area to host big events such as the Gold Coast Show and the Big Day Out, a report has suggested.

This may mean that the Gold Coast Highway at Southport is to be re-routed, allowing for the Broadwater Parklands to be doubled in size, reveals the Gold Coast Bulletin.

The Committee for Southport is believed to have had the plans drawn up and is now seeking approval from the state government before the Commonwealth Games get underway in 2018.

Chairman of the committee John Howe told the website: "This could be one of the world's greatest entertainment precincts.

"It would more than double the venue, which already attracts 10,000 during the weekend of the V8 Supercars when it hosts the rock concert."

He also anticipates that the facility will bring benefits to the local community, which may increase demand for apartments for rent in the Gold Coast.

A countdown clock was recently installed at the end of Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise to show how long it is until the start of the Commonwealth Games.

Athletes and visitors from all over the world are expected to descend on the Gold Coast for the event in five years' time.
