Green Waste Bin Rollout for Gold Coast

Owners of Gold Coast real estate are being advised that they can still take up optional green bins for garden waste.

More than 3,600 residents have taken part in the new scheme, with Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate saying that the take-up rate is exceeding expectations.

He explained: "I admit I am among the thousands of residents who have taken up the green bin option introduced in February at a cost of just $52 per year, which equates to only $1 per week.

"Based on similar schemes in other cities, we predicted 4,750 sign ups by the end of June. However at the rate residents are supporting 'the new bin on the block', we should reach the 5,000 mark by the end of next month."

The initiative is designed to foster the ongoing maintenance of gardens, while keeping the environment in mind when disposing of waste.

Mr Tate described the new scheme as a "win-win" for both the city and local residents. Grass clippings, palm fronds and garden cuttings can all go into the bin, saving locals a trip to the tip.

Commercial businesses, free-standing homes and units that have body corporate approval are all eligible to receive a bin.
